Statewide Let's Go In-Class Program
Let's Go has expanded across Washington state to create a new generation of youth who value bicycling, walking, and public transportation as the first options for mobility throughout their adult lives, regardless of socioeconomic status, ability, or location. The program hopes to provide fair transportation options for all people in Washington, and teach children how to transport themselves safely while experiencying the joy of cycling.
Cascade has been providing youth bike education to Seattle and Edmonds public schools since 2016, teaching upward of 25,000 Puget Sound-area children bike and pedestrian safety skills to begin their lifelong joy of safe bicycling and walking. Now, that curriculum has exopanded statewide thanks to the creation of the School-Based Bicycle Safety Education Program funded by the Climate Commitment Act and administered by the Washington State Department of Transportation, which selected Cascade to design and implement this expansion. Thank you to our state legislators that enacted this law!
Cascade is working with educators across the state to implement two statewide bike education programs, Let's Go in-class and Youth Development after-school, which will phase in over 16 years and are expected to reach 90 percent of Washington state students by 2039. Environmental health is central to this expansion as Cascade is prioritizing partners who serve communities where poverty, safety, and community plans point to the highest needs.
In the first 2 years of in-class Let's Go programming, Cascade partnered with 14 total education partners across the state to serve over 38,400 youth in grades 3-8 in over 215 schools and 104 school districts, including but not limited to Spokane, Tacoma, Bellingham, Highline, Everett, and Vancouver, and two Education Service Districts (ESD): North Central Educational Service District 171 and Northwest Educational Service District 189. These partner districts are planning to implement the program through Physical Education classes in over 45 schools across Washington state.
In the third year of the program, Statewide Let’s Go is partnering with 17 education partners to run programming in 305 schools (275 elementary and 30 middle schools) and is projected to serve over 67,200 students in grades 3-8.
