Chilly Hilly (self-supported) Brisk pace

Let's kick off the cycling season with a classic: The Chilly Hilly route! 33 miles, guaranteed hills, might be chilly. We will ride at an effort equivalent to 17mph on flat terrain.

Please note: During COVID-19 restrictions, all Free Group Rides are limited in the number of allowed participants. Registration for the ride (using the red “Register Now” button above) is REQUIRED to participate. If you decide not to ride, please click the red "Cancel My Registration" button above (or 'cancel registration' from your Cascade "My Account" dashboard) so that an additional spot will be made available to another.

Face coverings (for mouth and nose) are required when onboard the ferry, and when the group makes extended stops. Face coverings are strongly recommended for the duration of the ride. Please bring personal hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes and tissues for use at rest stops.

We will observe current social distancing guidelines when off the bike, and strive to maintain at least 10-12ft separation between riders when on the bike.

Let's meet onboard the Washington State Ferry headed to Bainbridge Island, departing from the ferry terminal at 0855. Don't be late! Riders need to ride through the toll gate and pay $10.05 for round trip fare (ORCA card saves $1). Leader will be at the bicycle waiting queue by 0845. We will have our pre-ride safety brief onboard the vessel in the cafe area. We'll start riding around 0930, right after we disembark the vessel. 

Street parking in downtown Seattle is free on Sundays.

We will climb and descend hills at our own pace, regrouping as needed at the top of big climbs, with a goal of staying together for the entire route.

Restrooms are available onboard. We will stop along the way for restrooms/water at mile 14, and we will enjoy a coffee/pastry at mile 25. Lots of food options at the finish in downtown Bainbridge Island.

Return ferries run approximately every hour, no additional fee. Recommend bringing an extra layer for warmth while waiting to board.

Please bring a spare tube and tools to fix a flat, just in case. Please have full fenders if the roads are wet, or you may be asked to ride at the rear of the group.

Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed above or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Leader will post a ride-canceled note in the Comments section below at least two hours prior to the start and Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location.
