Ride Description:

This week it's a crowd-favorite MUMPS loop around Lake Washington, with a scenic detour through Beaux Arts Village, Enetai, Eastland, Medina and across the 520 trail to the Kirkland waterfront and back to the start.

Starting time and location: Ride starts at 10 am at Log Boom Park in Kenmore, where there are restrooms & water.

Parking: Please do not park in the Log Boom parking lot; use the on-street parking on NE 175th St. just east of the park.

Pace: This is a Brisk-paced ride (14-16 mph), on the same route as the Moderate and Vigorous-paced MUMPS groups. Riders are welcome to start at Moderate, Brisk or Vigorous pace and move to another group later.  The speed limit on trails is 15 mph.

The planned route/cue sheet is at the link below. The goal is to stay together via regrouping as necessary, but we won’t be able to wait long for anyone substantially off the pace.  Please, bring navigation aids in case you need to finish on your own, as the ride becomes self-led for those ahead of or behind the group.

Restrooms:  There are planned restroom stops at Matthews Beach Park (mile 5, optional), Seward Park (mile 19), Coulon Park (mile 27), and Kirkland Marina Park (mile 45).

Food:  Moderate will stop  at Starbucks at mile 29.4, so bring snacks and water for nutrition and hydration as needed.

Cancellation: Forecast for rain or unsafe riding conditions will be cause for cancellation, in which case the cancellation will be posted in the Comments section below, at least 2 hours before the start and  the ride leader will not be at the start.

IMPORTANT: Each pace ride leader will make a weather cancellation decision independently, so one pace group may cancel while another rides, and one group may take a shortcut, while another may not. This could change your options for moving between pace groups.

Fenders: Please be considerate of other riders' comfort and safety by using full fenders with long mud flaps if rain is expected or the roads are wet. You may ride with us without them, but if you are spraying other riders you will need to drop to the back of the group.

Repairs: Be prepared with the equipment and know-how to take care of your own flats and mechanicals, and a plan for getting back to the start if your bike won't take you there (ORCA card or someone to call). If you have a problem, the group will stop briefly to make sure you will be OK on your own, but we will not wait for repairs to be completed.

Safety talk and on time-departure:  Please be at the start and ready to ride at least 15 minutes prior to ride start time, to participate in the pre-ride briefing and safety talk. The ride rolls out at 10 a.m.

Pre-registration:  Please register by clicking the red "Register Now" button at the top of this page, to save time at the start (and enable the leader to email you in case of changes/cancellation). You don't need to un-register if you can't make it to the ride. If you are unable to pre-register in time, you can sign up at the start.

We hope you can join us!

Hi Pidgie, I'll plan on joining up with your group about mile 10.7 (the corner of Montlake and E. Hamlin Street.  By the way, the group will most likely need to stay on Montlake until E. Lake Washington Blvd.  The portion of the 520 trail that crosses 520 at 24th Ave E has been closed for construction.  Roger

The goal: keep MUMPS fun and SAFE during the rainy season, by keeping road spray to a minimum.

The rain is coming and we're running out of time to get our fenders in order!

If you have stable, wide fenders and flaps extending to within 2" of the ground, you are good to go! If not, you need to act now so that you aren't relegated to riding behind the group :(

Unfortunately, almost all fenders are inadequate for group riding. What's worse, most are so short that even an added set of long flaps may not be long enough! Get out the ruler, check the distance to the ground, and add material to the flaps as needed.

Duct tape, silicon adhesive or gorilla glue, plastic milk/water/etc. bottle material, small bolts/nuts and other household items can be used to make and install low-cost extensions to those flaps that you were sure would be long enough ;)

Be aware that flaps that are 2" from the ground will drag under certain circumstances (going over bumps, curbs, etc.) So don't go much longer. Rounding the corners will help.

Note that semi-rigid materials can be noisy when scraping, so you might prefer softer material at the very bottom.

Refer to comments on past MUMPS ride listings for more fender information.

If we aren't rained out (!) we'll plan to talk about fenders before the ride. Come with your questions and helpful tips ready to share!
