Cascade's summer camps keep kids engaged in learning
Got some kids at home who are dreaming of sunnier days? Cascade’s summer camps are just around the corner, and this year’s camp lineup features some exciting changes. There’s a significant body of evidence out there suggesting that keeping children mentally engaged over the summer can help slow summer learning loss. So this year we’re digging deeper by integrating themes and lessons that tie bicycling to other important (and fun!) academic areas.
The best news? Registration for these camps is already open!
The scoop on camps: Cascade offers week-long day camps in its Magnuson Park and White Center locations, all of which which are loaded with biking, trail adventures and lots of hands-on learning for ages 6-15 years. Our bike-based programs promote skill development, exploration, physical wellness, personal responsibility and teamwork. The camps also emphasize care for the equipment we use and the land on which we live.
Under the careful guidance of our experienced counselors, campers discover the trails, parks, and urban wilds of our much-loved Puget Sound region. Activities and skills are tailored for the specific ages of each camp session. Some of the activities offered may include basic bike maintenance skills, developing safe riding habits, and learning about pedestrian and biking infrastructure. Plus kids get a cool camp t-shirt.
What’s new this year: We’re excited to announce that our camps now have different themes on which rides and activities will be based.
- Art camp: Experiment and play with a wide range of materials to explore bicycling through art. Find inspiration in old bike components, cycling themed art projects, and ways to use two wheels to create new masterpieces.
- STEM camp: Join other young riders to explore the worlds of science, technology, engineering, and math using bicycles as a gateway.
- Nature camp: Explore local ecology around neighborhoods using bikes as a means to do it. See and identify birds, learn about plant species, and explore waterways in this nature-inspired week of biking.
- Bike packing camp: Learn about what bike packing is and gain new hands-on experience and knowledge in what bike to ride, how to pack gear, what equipment to bring, how to plan a trip, and much more (for ages 13-15 who have previously attended a Cascade camp).
