Great news about Roosevelt Way!

We believe that all neighborhoods across Seattle should be connected by safe, comfortable bikeways for all people to ride.

Roosevelt Way isn't safe for very many people, whether they're biking, walking or driving.

That's why we're so happy that Mayor Ed Murray and the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) have decided to add a protected bike lane from NE 65th Street to the south end of the University Bridge when they repave Roosevelt Way this year.

This is a big win for people who walk, bike and drive on Roosevelt Way, and a huge political lift for the Mayor and SDOT.

During the update to the Bicycle Master Plan over the last several years, Cascade was a big advocate for prioritizing a protected bike lane on Roosevelt Way. But when SDOT showed their early plans for repaving Roosevelt Way, the protected bike lane wasn't going to happen.

In partnering with Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, University Greenways and Feet First, we were able to get SDOT to change course.

Now that SDOT has committed to building the protected bike lane this year, we need to show-up in support and say thank you.

This next week, SDOT will be holding three "drop-in" sessions to share their latest plans with the community. Please attend one of these three sessions:

Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2-3:30 p.m.
at University Heights Community Center, 5031 University Way NE

Wednesday, Jan. 21, 8-9:30 a.m.
at Wayward Coffeehouse, 6417 Roosevelt Way NE

Thursday, Jan. 22, 5:30-7 p.m.
at University Heights Community Center, 5031 University Way NE

Thanks to the advocacy by people just like you, here's what we will win:

  • Improved crosswalks, curb extensions, curb ramps and sidewalks will ensure everyone is able to walk safely along and across Roosevelt Way NE.
  • Bus islands and in-lane stops will give people access to efficient transit connections in this dense business and residential corridor, from NE Seattle to the UW, and beyond.
  • Critical safety upgrades to the existing bicycle lanes will transform Roosevelt Way NE from one of the most dangerous streets for people biking to one of Seattle’s safest.

We need just a little more of your help to make sure these improvements are built! Some people are sending negative comments to the Mayor's Office about the changes, so we need to make sure the mayor also hears from everyone who supports the improvements.
