Frequently Asked Questions

Registration

What's the price of registration?

$45 for adult members, $60 for adult non-members, and $5 for youth (18 and under).

What's the purpose of the tiers?

If you'd like to add a donation while checking out, you can select an optional tier. Your donation supports Cascade Bicycle Club's work in advocating for safer streets for people who bike, walk, and roll.

Do I have to register my child separately if they're on the bike or in a trailer with me?

Yes. All persons participating in the event -- even if they're not actively powering the bike -- need to be registered.

Can I ride as a solo cyclist?

Yes! While this is a family-friendly ride, it is not a "family-exclusive" ride. Everyone is welcome whether you're riding alone, with a partner, with friends, or the whole family.

How do tandem riders register?

Each rider will need to register separately, for safety and liability reasons.

Can I register if I plan to ride an e-bike?

Yes, however please note that class 3 e-bikes are not permitted on this ride due to the multi-use trails that are included on the route.

Can I get a refund if I can’t use my registration?

See our refund policy.

Route

What sections are car-free?

The majority of the Lake Union Family Ride is on multi-use trails or protected bike lanes. On the east side of Lake Union, the route follows the residential Fairview Ave E and trails alongside Fairview Ave N.

Can I start the ride early?

Course hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Riding outside of these hours may mean that you'll miss out on route support, rest stops, and more.

Is this route flat?

This ride is mostly flat. However, there is a steep but short (half a block) climb up E Hamlin Street and a gradual hill coming up the Cheshiahud Lake Union Loop toward Fremont Bridge.

What if I can not make it the entire route?

In the event of a mechanical issue or a non-life threatening injury like a sprained wrist, SAG vehicles can transport you to the next rest stop or the finish line, whichever is nearest.

If I have a flat or other mechanical problems will there be someone to help me?

Yes! Outriders, posted mechanics, and SAG drivers can all assist you with common mechanical problems.

Are the other roads closed to vehicle traffic?

No, though the route includes minimal instances of riding with traffic. You should be familiar with the rules of the road and know how to communicate with other riders (including kids on bikes), pedestrians, and drivers around you. Read more on how to Ride S.M.A.R.T.

Is the route family-friendly?

Yes! Everyone is encouraged to ride the Lake Union Family Ride and join in the fun.

Logistics

Where can I park my car at the start line? Parking is available at the Gas Works parking lot and street parking is available in the area. If you live nearby, we highly encourage you to ride to the start line in the spirit of all things bikes!

Miscellaneous

Suggested items to bring? Late summer weather can be extremely variable. Bring a change of clothes to have in the car or in your pannier. Consider installing fenders on your bike, bring your rain gear, and two water bottles. Even if you don't know how to change a flat, bringing a flat kit and a spare inner tube that fits your bike will enable others to help you on the go.

Elevation Gain

Terrain
Mostly Flat

What Terrain Means

Terrain indicates the most common or average terrain type of the ride and should be considered relative to the length and overall difficulty of the ride. For example, a long-distance ride with a lot of elevation gain will be overall less challenging than a short ride with equal elevation gain. Consider the pace and frequency of regroup as well to understand how advanced a ride may be.

  • Mostly flat: Trails and/or mostly flat roads with a possible gentle uphill
  • Rolling: Climbs are short and easy, not too numerous
  • Some hills: A few short, steep hills, some moderate upgrades and/or longer gentle climbs
  • Hilly: Consistent or continuous climbing
  • Off-road: Significant unpaved sections
