This Ride West Sound’s Trolls, Olympic Discovery Trail & Dungeness Spit is a 48-mile rolling scenic loop showcasing some of the Olympic Peninsula’s most beautiful terrain. Expect approximately 1,900 feet of elevation gain spread across quiet rural roads, smooth trail sections, gentle rollers, and sweeping Strait views. While no single climb is massive, the route delivers a steady all-day spin through classic Pacific Northwest scenery.
We’ll regroup frequently to keep the ride together while riding at our own pace on climbs and descents. Highlights include a stop at the hidden and whimsical Troll Haven, one of the ODT’s most scenic stretches, and the windswept beauty of Dungeness Spit. Riders can also expect forested curves, smooth pavement, Olympic Mountain backdrops, and sweeping views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca throughout the day. Portions of the route utilize multi-use trails where we will observe posted speed limits—typically 15 MPH and occasionally 10 MPH—to ensure a safe and respectful ride for all trail users. Perfect for riders seeking a relaxed Northwest adventure that blends scenic trails, coastal views, and quiet backroads. Depending on group pace and time spent at stops, this ride may take up to five hours.
🚴 Did You Know?
John Wayne Marina in Sequim, Washington, is named after the legendary actor himself. The land was donated by the Wayne family, honoring his vision to create a marina in scenic Sequim Bay—waters he often explored aboard his yacht, Wild Goose. Today, the marina offers guest and permanent moorage, a restaurant, showers, laundry, and event facilities, making it a popular stop for boaters and cyclists alike.
🥪 Lunch Break & Rest Stops
We’ll pause at Rainshadow Café at mile 16, where riders may grab lunch or snacks to-go before continuing toward Dungeness Spit. Riders wanting a quicker stop can review the menu in advance at Rainshadow Café Menu and place a call-ahead order before the ride at (360) 797-1654. On clear days, we’ll enjoy a relaxed lunch break at the scenic bluff viewpoint within the Dungeness Recreation Area, with sweeping views toward Victoria, B.C. Restroom stops are available at the start, Rainshadow Café (16), Dungeness Recreation Area (25), John Wayne Marina (41), and again at the finish.
