Course Description:
Let's get ready for STP! Take some time early in the year to learn skills that will serve you through your STP training rides and during this epic, 206-mile ride from Seattle to Portland. Whether you're committed and registered or you're just thinking about it, this class is for you! This class is conveniently timed for attendees of the February 12 STP 101 Session, but everyone is welcome to sign up.
In this hands-on class, you’ll learn the fundamentals of drivetrain and shifting mechanics. Our step-by-step instructions will help you get your bike to shift and pedal more smoothly. You’ll learn how to properly maintain and adjust your drivetrain and shifting system.
Learn how to:
- Identify the parts of your drivetrain
- Clean and lube your drivetrain
- Inspect your drivetrain for common wear patterns and know when to replace parts
- Adjust your front and rear derailleurs
- Troubleshoot shifting problems
- Small class size and low instructor to student ratios allow you to learn in a patient and supportive environment
Prerequisites: If you do not know if your bike has standard or electric shifting (electric shifting requires a charging) it may be best to start with our Maintenance for Every Rider class.
Type of bike this class is for:
- Bring your own standard (non-electric) bike to adjust your shifting.
- We will not be teaching how to adjust electric shifting in this class.
- This class uses bike stands so please take any extra bags off of your seat post as that is often the best place to clamp.
- If you are unable to bring a bike to class one will be provided for you, but we cannot guarantee that it will have similar components to your personal bike.
