Free Group Ride
MUMPS- Clockwise Kirkland, Medina, Mercer Island, North Seattle Loop (Moderate)
Registration Now Open
... of 15 spots remaining
This week we ride clockwise around the top half of Lake Washington, along Kirkland's waterfront, across 520 to and down through Medina, West Bellevue and Beaux Arts Village, then catch I-90 for a scenic loop of the curves and mostly gentle ups and downs of Mercer Island. After continuing on I-90 to Seattle, we'll visit Madrona, the Arboretum, the U District, Ravenna, Meadowbrook, Chelsea, Cedar Park and Sheridan Beach neighborhoods before hopping on the Burke for the final leg of our ride.
Start Location: We'll meet at Log Boom Park, where restrooms are available. Depending on which MUMPS pace groups have rides listed this Monday, Steady and upper loop Moderate groups will gather near the restrooms, Brisk will meet near the edge of the parking lot, and full loop Moderate in the middle (between the other groups)
Please be there, ready to ride, at the time noted above. We will start with the required safety briefing, and roll out when that's done. All riders must attend the safety briefing to participate.
Parking: Please do not park in the Log Boom parking lot; use the on-street parking on NE 175th St. just east of the park.
Pace: The MUMPS series offers multiple paces. Riders may "fall back" to a slower pace group if needed during the ride (but see "IMPORTANT" paragraph below). We'll limit our speed on any multi-use paths to the legal maximum (usually 15 MPH).
**We usually "self-pace" on the Mercer Island loop (about 10 miles) with informal sub-groups tending to form to ride at or above "normal" pace; we'll regroup afterward on the I-90 trail at the top of the island (on route/cue sheet at mile 31)**
Navigation: The planned route/cue sheet is at the link on the right. The goal is to stay together via regrouping as necessary, but we won’t be able to wait long for anyone substantially off the pace. Please, bring navigation aids in case you need to finish on your own, as the ride becomes self-led for those ahead of or behind the group.
Restrooms: There are planned restroom stops at Kirkland Marina Park (mile 7.8), Enatai park (mile 19.6) and Madrona Park (mile 34.6)
Food: Enjoy the snacks you bring with you at any of the rest stops. There is no sit-down coffee/food stop.
Can't make it after all? Please cancel your registration to open spots for other riders. (Click on the green "Register or Cancel" button and follow the prompts.) If possible, cancel at least 2 hours before ride start time.
Cancellation: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed above or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Leader will cancel the ride and all registered riders will be sent a notification email. If the ride is canceled at least two hours before the start, Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location. Please check before leaving for the ride.
IMPORTANT: Each ride leader will make their own weather cancellation decisions independently, so one pace group may cancel while another rides, and one group may take a shortcut, while another may not. An "on the roll" switch to a rain route is possible. Groups may ride different routes on the same day (half lake loop vs. full loop, for example.) These factors could change your options for moving between pace groups on the roll.
Fenders: Please be considerate of other riders' comfort and safety by using full fenders with long, stable mud flaps (ideally 2" and a maximum of 4" from the ground) if rain is possible or the roads are wet. You may still ride without such long fenders and flaps, but if it's wet you will need to ride at the back of the group (behind all bikes with better fenders).
Flashing Lights: Please reserve high-output flashing/blinking lights for your solo rides; they can distract others on group rides. Setting them to constant-on (non-flashing) is appreciated if you don't want to turn them off.
Repairs: Be prepared with the equipment and know-how to take care of your own flats and mechanicals, and a plan for getting back to the start if your bike won't take you there (ORCA card or someone to call). If you have a problem the group may stop briefly to make sure you will be OK on your own, but we may not wait for repairs to be completed.
We hope you can join us!

Event Announcements
Thanks to MUMPS ride leader Alan L. for alerting us to the temporary closure of a section of East Mercer Way.
Our route has been edited to bypass the closure; it can be accessed at the "Route Map" link on the ride listing (which is unchanged):
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38621725
Note that the route title has been changed to: " MUMPS#17c+ *DETOUR* CW Med/MI/ N Sea"
The first leg of the detour will follow the "official" city detour route, so it should be signed accordingly.
This detour route is subject to change, but the URL will remain the same, so your nav device should grab any updates.
