You are invited to join us for a North-half Lake Washington counter-clockwise loop from Matthews Beach Park, that heads south, then east mostly along the SR 520 trail, then north into Kirkland with a visit to the Totem Lake natural area and the lower portion of Norway Hill before dropping into Bothell for pie at the Senior Center.  Return route to Matthews Beach is flat, along the Burke-Gilman trail.  

Pace:  This is a Moderate pace ride, 14-16 mph on the flats in the absence of wind.  We will climb and descend the major hills at our own pace and will regroup at the top as needed. We'll also limit our speed on any multi-use paths to the legal maximum (usually 15 MPH).

Start Time & Location: We'll meet at Matthews Beach Park, where restrooms and water are available. Please be there, ready to ride, at the time noted above. We will start with the required safety briefing, and roll out when that's done.  All riders must attend the safety briefing to participate.

Navigation: The planned route/cue sheet is at the Route Map link. We will regroup at the top of significant climbs, but we won’t be able to wait long for anyone substantially off the pace.  Please bring navigation aids in case you need to finish on your own, as the ride becomes self-led for those ahead of or behind the group. 

Restrooms:  At start and at mile 13 Marina Park in Kirkland, mile 18 Totem Lake, mile 27 Log Boom Park, and at end, Matthews Beach.

Food:  Pie at North Shore Senior Center, mile 23.

Cancellation: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed above or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Leader will cancel the ride and all registered riders will be sent a notification email. If the ride is cancelled at least two hours before the start, Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location. Please check before leaving for the ride.

Fenders: Please be considerate of other riders' comfort and safety by using full fenders with long, stable mud flaps (ideally 2" and a maximum of 4" from the ground) if rain is possible or the roads are wet. You may still ride without such long fenders and flaps, but if it's wet you will need to ride at the back of the group, behind all bikes with better fenders. 

Repairs: Be prepared with the equipment and know-how to take care of your own flats and mechanical issues, and a plan for getting back to the start if your bike won't take you there (transportation fare or someone to call). If you have a problem the group may stop briefly to make sure you will be OK on your own, but we may not wait for repairs to be completed.

What Pace Means

Pace classification indicates the intended range of speeds on level ground without breaks. This means downhill sections of the ride may be faster, and uphill sections slower.

Note: For rides with a “hilly” terrain classification, consider choosing a pace one step down from your usual comfort level.

What Terrain Means

Terrain indicates the most common or average terrain type of the ride and should be considered relative to the length and overall difficulty of the ride. For example, a long-distance ride with a lot of elevation gain will be overall less challenging than a short ride with equal elevation gain. Consider the pace and frequency of regroup as well to understand how advanced a ride may be.

  • Mostly flat: Trails and/or mostly flat roads with a possible gentle uphill
  • Rolling: Climbs are short and easy, not too numerous
  • Some hills: A few short, steep hills, some moderate upgrades and/or longer gentle climbs
  • Hilly: Consistent or continuous climbing
  • Off-road: Significant unpaved sections
