Join us for a ride from the south side of the Sumner Fred Meyer parking lot for a 21-mile route at Steady Pace of 12-14 mph!
Are you new to bicycling, been off your bike for a while, feeling trapped inside or tired of looking at the same four walls during exercise? Is 2026 your year to get active, begin commuting, take part in the Free Group Rides, tackle your first century (100-mile ride), the STP, or another personal challenge? Are you a bit unsure about your biking capabilities, riding in groups, or cycling during winter? If so, then the Getting Ready to Ride Series (GR2R) is for you. GR2R South (GR2R-S) is an early season, eight-week progressive series focusing on the South King County and East Pierce County areas. Our first outing begins with a fun, mostly flat ride and then adds a bit of elevation gain, distance or technical difficulty each week.
Let's meet in the Sumner Fred Meyer parking lot, in the furthest east parking area on your right as you face the main Fred Meyer entrance. Be there, ready to go at 10:00am. We will start with a required safety briefing and roll out when that's done. All riders must attend the safety briefing to participate. Restrooms are available at the start. We may stop along the way for restroom break at Auburn Outlet Collection (mile 9). We’ll also stop for coffee/snacks at Pie Style mile 10.
We will climb and descend hills at our own pace, and our goal will be to stay together. We'll also limit our speed on any multi-use paths and be under the legal maximum (usually 15 MPH, occasionally 10 MPH).
Bring a spare tube and tools to fix a flat, just in case. Other things to bring: phone; ID; cash and/or credit card; ORCA card; water and a small snack. Please have full fenders if the roads are wet, or you may be asked to ride at the rear of the group.
Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed in the Weather Status or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Leader will cancel the ride and all registered riders will be sent a notification email. If the ride is cancelled at least two hours before the start, Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location. Please check before leaving for the ride.
We hope you can join us!
