Please join us for a ride from Southworth to Port Orchard and back, with lunch at the halfway point.

We'll begin this ride on a Washington State ferry, sailing from West Seattle to Southworth, and then riding to Port Orchard.  Along the way, we'll make a short out-and-back, down-and-up, side trip to explore the waterfront at Manchester State Park.  This is a beautiful ride on quiet roads.  By the date of the ride, central Kitsap's amazing spring foliage will be in full bloom.  The ride is generally flat and mostly along the water, with just a few hills.  Special feature: as we turn toward Manchester State Park, we may see one of Western Washington's few free-range camels!

We'll have lunch in Port Orchard (probably, Peninsula Beverage Co.).  We'll return via the same route, minus the side trip.  Bring money for the ferry and lunch.  Water and restrooms are available on the boat and at Manchester State Park.

Note:  The ferry schedule on the run to Southworth is limited.  In order to arrive in Port Orchard by lunchtime and be able to return at a reasonable time, we'll plan on taking the ferry that departs at 9:10 a.m.  If you miss the ferry, you will not be on the ride.  This means that you should arrive 25 minutes before sailing so you can have time to purchase your ticket, or have your Orca card scanned, and be ready to board with foot passengers and other cyclists at 9:00 a.m.

Ride through the ferry tollbooth and go directly to the ticket office at the end of the dock to purchase your ticket.  Water and restrooms are available on the ferry. We'll do the safety briefing immediately after disembarking.  Be prepared if you have a mechanical problem e.g. a flat tire.

Subject to mechanical issues, road work, etc., we will endeavor to return via the 2:20 ferry from Southworth.  No fare is collected on the return trip.

Parking:  We recommend parking in the UPPER parking lot at Lincoln Park (the first parking lot on the right that you come to as you head south on Fauntleroy Way).  From there, you can ride down the hill to the ferry dock (approximately .8 mile).  Avoid the second, lower Lincoln Park lot, which has a time limit that is enforced.  As an alternative, consider putting your bike on the King County Rapid Ride C bus, which stops right at the ferry dock.

Weather cancellation: Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed above or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Leader will cancel the ride and all registered riders will be sent a notification email. If the ride is cancelled at least two hours before the start, Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location. Please check before leaving for the ride.

What to Know Before You Go

  • Advance registration required. Cancel if unable to attend, to open space for others.
  • Must be present at safety briefing to participate.
  • Helmets required.
  • Riders under 18 years old require parental consent & approval from the Ride Leader.
Distance
29 mi.
Elevation Gain
1,400 ft.
Pace
Steady: [12-14mph]

What Pace Means

Pace classification indicates the intended range of speeds on level ground without breaks. This means downhill sections of the ride may be faster, and uphill sections slower.

Note: For rides with a “hilly” terrain classification, consider choosing a pace one step down from your usual comfort level.

Terrain
Some Hills

What Terrain Means

Terrain indicates the most common or average terrain type of the ride and should be considered relative to the length and overall difficulty of the ride. For example, a long-distance ride with a lot of elevation gain will be overall less challenging than a short ride with equal elevation gain. Consider the pace and frequency of regroup as well to understand how advanced a ride may be.

  • Mostly flat: Trails and/or mostly flat roads with a possible gentle uphill
  • Rolling: Climbs are short and easy, not too numerous
  • Some hills: A few short, steep hills, some moderate upgrades and/or longer gentle climbs
  • Hilly: Consistent or continuous climbing
  • Off-road: Significant unpaved sections
