CHEW is a 12-week training series for maintaining and improving wintertime fitness. Be prepared for hills and climbing! 

Ride Start: For CHEW 6 we'll meet at Bear Creek Park and Ride in Redmond. Be there, ready to go at the time listed above. Restrooms are available at mile 1.8 at Perrigo Park. Steady riders will meet closer to the south end of the lot, Brisk will meet toward the north end of the lot, and Moderate can gather in the middle. We will start with a required safety briefing, and roll out when that's done, so make sure you arrive early.  All riders must attend the safety briefing to participate.

Route: From the Park & Ride we'll head east to Perrigo Park where there are restrooms, then we backtrack to downtown Redmond and up Education Hill. We'll continue north to English Hill and Hollywood Hill, then down into Woodinville to our rest stop at Wilmot Gateway Park. We then head up 175th and Woodinville Duvall Road to our turn north towards Snohomish County to Maltby and Cathcart via Broadway. A quick downhill by Bob's Corn and Pumpkin Farm leads to the climb to Lost Lake, then down Echo Lake Rd to our lunch/rest stop near Echo Falls. After lunch, we'll head back to Maltby and retrace our route back to Woodinville Duvall Rd. From there, we'll go south on Mink Rd, Bear Creek Rd, and Avondale Rd, then east on 116th to Farrel-McWhirter Park, and finally back to the Park & Ride.
Please note the rain route listed in the additional links, and download that too, just in case.

Stops: We will stop early for a restroom break at mile 1.8, then a second rest stop at Wilmot Gateway Park at mile 13.4,  and for restrooms/water/coffee/snacks at the Union 76 on Echo Lake Rd at mile 30.9. There will be optional rest stops at Cottage Lake Park at mile 38.1 and Perrigo Park at mile 47.

Pace: Riders should be able to sustain the appropriate pace which can vary depending on grade and tail or head winds. On hills, we will climb and descend at our own pace, and regroup when needed. A rider who is significantly under the pace of the overall group may have to either drop to a slower pace or continue the ride on their own. We will also observe speed limits on multi-use paths/trails (sometimes 15 MPH or even 10 MPH). 

Fenders! Please be considerate of your fellow riders and have full fenders if the roads are wet, or you may be asked to ride at the rear of the group.

Things to bring: a spare tube and tools to fix a flat (just in case); a phone; ID; cash and/or credit card; ORCA card; water and a small snack. It's also recommended to have a navigation device or at least access to the RWGPS route on your phone, in case you need to finish the ride on your own.

Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed in the Weather Status or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Director will cancel the ride and all registered riders will be sent a notification email. If the ride is cancelled at least two hours before the start, Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location. Please check before leaving for the ride.

What Pace Means

Pace classification indicates the intended range of speeds on level ground without breaks. This means downhill sections of the ride may be faster, and uphill sections slower.

Note: For rides with a “hilly” terrain classification, consider choosing a pace one step down from your usual comfort level.

What Terrain Means

Terrain indicates the most common or average terrain type of the ride and should be considered relative to the length and overall difficulty of the ride. For example, a long-distance ride with a lot of elevation gain will be overall less challenging than a short ride with equal elevation gain. Consider the pace and frequency of regroup as well to understand how advanced a ride may be.

  • Mostly flat: Trails and/or mostly flat roads with a possible gentle uphill
  • Rolling: Climbs are short and easy, not too numerous
  • Some hills: A few short, steep hills, some moderate upgrades and/or longer gentle climbs
  • Hilly: Consistent or continuous climbing
  • Off-road: Significant unpaved sections
