Wally World: San Juan Island Ramble (Steady)
Ride Contact
... of 20 spots remaining
Join us for a steady paced (12-14 mph) scenic ride around San Juan Island. Our stops will include Roche Harbor, a sculpture park, and Lime Kiln Point State park where there is a small chance we can view Orcas as this is one of their favorite feeding spots.
Lets meet at the Anacortes ferry terminal and be ready to get on the ferry by 8:30 in order to catch the 9:00 ferry to Friday Harbor. Prior to our meeting have your ferry ticket as pedestrians and bicycles are the first to be loaded. Information on the ferry schedule, parking, and fares is as follows:
Depart Anacortes: 9:00
Arrive Friday Harbor: 10:10
Depart Friday Harbor: 3:50
Arrive Anacortes 5:00
The fare for the trip is $18.00 ($9.00 for seniors over 65) plus $4.00 for the bicycle.
Parking at the ferry terminal is $13.00 for 24 hours.
We will hold our safety briefing at Friday Harbor before departing on the ride.
Water and restrooms are available at the start and at Roche Harbor (mile 11). Restrooms and possibly water are available at Lime Kiln Point State Park (mile 20). Pack a picnic lunch unless you plan on purchasing food at Roche Harbor. We will stop for lunch at the sculpture park just after Roche Harbor. Hopefully, we will be back at Friday Harbor in time to purchase ice cream from the wonderful store right beside the ferry landing. The ice cream store only takes cash.
This is a hilly route. We will climb and descend hills at our own pace and regroup as necessary. We will stay with you in the event of a flat tire. In the unlikely event that you experience a mechanical failure which prohibits you from continuing the ride, there are two options for getting picked up and taken back to Friday Harbor. San Juan Taxi & Tours, (360) 378-3550, has a fleet of multi-passenger vans equipped with bike racks to accommodate stranded cyclists. The phone number for Bob's Taxi / Salish Sea Island Cabs is (360) 378-6777. Be sure to explicitly request a vehicle that can accommodate a bicycle when you speak to the dispatcher.
Bring a spare tube and tools to fix a flat, just in case. Other things to bring: phone, ID, cash, a credit card, water, and lunch. You may use an ORCA card to pay for the ferry. Please have full fenders if the roads are wet, or you may be asked to ride at the rear of the group.
Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed in the Weather Status or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Leader will cancel the ride and all registered riders will be sent a notification email. If the ride is cancelled at least two hours before the start, Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location. Please check before leaving for the ride.
We hope you can join us!
