All riders of all ages, abilities and identities are invited to explore the U District Art Walk with Senior Ladies On Wheels (SLOW). Ride starts at the Friendly Gallery at University Friends Meeting, just one block from the Burke Gilman Trail and a few blocks from the U District Link Station (yes, you can take your bike on the train). If you must drive, there's a small lot north of the building. Plan to arrive by 5:15 so you can enjoy the art before the start of the ride. You'll need to be ready to go at the 5:45 start time. We will start with a required safety briefing, and roll out when that's done. All riders must attend the safety briefing to participate.
Venues in the U District Art Walk include several small shops spread out along University Way and Ravenna Boulevard. Check the link to the right for the current lineup. Several locations include arts and crafts vendors, music and opportunities to make art. We'll pause at Seven Coffee Roasters on 20th and Ravenna to enjoy the art on display and grab a treat. Some riders may want to head home from here; the rest of us will return to the start by 8 pm when the Art Walk shuts down.
We will climb and descend hills at our own pace, and we will stay together if we get briefly separated by traffic lights or hills. This ride is along slow-speed streets frequently used by bicycles, so we will mix with traffic and occasionally ride on sidewalks. Restrooms are available at the start and at several Art Walk locations along the ride.
Bring a spare tube and tools to fix a flat, just in case. Other things to bring: phone; ID; cash and/or credit card; ORCA card; water and a small snack. Please have full fenders if the roads are wet, or you may be asked to ride at the rear of the group.
Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed in the Weather Status or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Leader will cancel the ride and all registered riders will be sent a notification email. Even if the ride is cancelled, the Ride Leader will be present at the Friendly Gallery enjoying the art.
We hope you can join us!
