Bicycling Basics / Getting Started

Are you new to bicycling, or just been off your bike for awhile? Is 2020 your year to get active, begin commuting, take part in Free Group Rides, or maybe even tackle your first century (100 mile ride), the STP, or another personal challenge? Are you a bit unsure about your biking capabilities, riding in groups, or cycling during winter?  If so, then the Getting Ready to Ride Series (GR2R) is for you. GR2R is an early season, eight-week progressive series that adds a bit of elevation gain, distance or technical difficulty each week.

GR2R rides are free and open to anyone. You will ride with others who share your pace and enthusiasm for riding. All rides will be led by Cascade Ride Leaders; experienced volunteers who enjoy riding, are knowledgeable about bike safety and the rules of the road, and who know the routes.

During the Seattle series, we explore different neighborhoods and take advantage of some of the trails and neighborhood greenways in the city.  These will be social, stay-together rides with waits at the top of hills and at all critical turns, along with some photo-op stops.

In addition to steady rain, ice/snow and any other hazardous conditions will cancel a ride. If a ride is canceled due to hazardous conditions, a notice will be posted here, in the comments section below, by 8:00 a.m. on the day of the ride.  If that notice is posted, the ride leaders will not be at the start.

There is a bathroom at the start. We can also make a restroom stop at the halfway point if needed. All riders should come equipped to deal with their own mechanical issues and bring enough snacks and water.  Waiting for mechanical issues will be at the discretion of the ride leader. It’s winter, so please dress appropriately and use fenders on your bike. Please arrive at least 20 minutes early (9:40 a.m.) to get yourself ready, listen to the safety briefing and sign or check the waiver. 10:00 a.m. is roll-out time!

This last ride in the series is also the most scenic.  We start from Gas Works, heads out to Golden Gardens, cross the Hiram Chittenden Locks, then climbs up to Magnolia Bluff, before crossing over to Queen Anne Hill, where we will enjoy the views of Seattle from Kerry Park  before returning to the start.

Pre-registering online: If you have a Cascade account, you can pre-register for this ride online by clicking on the Register button at the top of this page and entering your information. Pre-registering saves time at the beginning of the ride and provides legible emergency contact information. If you cannot make the ride, you do not need to unregister.

Comments

Sorry, but the rest of the GR2R-Seattle series is canceled because of the need to take precautions against the Corona Virus pandemic.   Thanks to all who participated in the rides!

As of 16 March, Cascade Bicycle Club and the Rides Committee have decided to suspend Free Group Rides through the end of March and reevaluate the situation surrounding the coronavirus at that time.

Bicycling is still a great way to exercise and boost your immune system during this time of public health advisory. We encourage you to find a way to continue to ride your bike in a responsible and safe way during the upcoming weeks.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these difficult times. We look forward to riding as a group again soon. Stay safe and healthy.

Nowadays we can see that every ride associated with this cascade bicycle group has been cancelled. The reason is none other than the covid-19. The situation is going cbd oil for anxiety to be critical now and it is better to give a gap to conduct these kinds of group riding.
