Bicycle San Diego: Day 1 - Great Western Loop
If you are new, please read our newcomer information.
Come join us for warm, sunny and hilly Cascade Free Group Rides in San Diego. Experience the beautiful Pacific coast, inland desert mountains, Rancho Santa Fe, and the enchanting Elfin Forest. You are not required to ride each day. Today’s route is through beautiful desert mountains. One CBC Exceptional Ride Leader said that “this is my favorite ride in San Diego.” It is 44 miles long and has a total elevation gain of 4000 feet. We'll ride at moderate pace typically at 15-16 mph when on flat terrain, self-pace while riding up hills, and regroup at the top of hills. There is a restroom at Starbucks where we park & meet. We'll also make a rest room and nutrition stop at the Lyons Valley Trading Post at mile 29.2. This is a rural country store with very limited food for purchase so bring your own ride nutrition. Please print a cue sheet from the link if you use one. We will be out of cell phone range for part of the ride. Be certain to bring spare tubes and equipment to fix a flat if needed.
This ride is available as a RIDE LEADER MENTORING OPPORTUNITY.
Weather: It generally is sunny and dry in San Diego during February. The historical high/low temperature in late February is 65/55, although it was 10 degrees warmer in Feb 2016 and 10 degrees cooler the year before. In the rare event of rain, the ride leader will not be at the ride start should weather meet the definition for cancellation (showers). Ride cancellation will be announced in the Comments Section at least two (2) hours prior to the ride start.

If you wish to rent a bike locally you’ll need to arrive early enough the day before to get from the airport (25 miles) and get fit before they close. Local bike rental is ~$50/day and good climbing bikes are available. Some very reliable bike stores close to Solana Beach include:
- Trek Superstore (http://www.trekbicyclesuperstore.com/)
- Revolution (http://revolutionbikeshop.com/)
