The fast five with Kay

  1. What do you enjoy about bicycling?
I have a lot of appreciation for the community I've met through cycling, especially the group of strong women who share the same passion for exercise, self-improvement, and support for others. When I'm on my bike, I love the feeling of freedom and the chance to disconnect, exploring new areas, the sunshine and breeze on my face, and that rush of joy and triumph after conquering a particularly challenging hill.

  2. How did you hear about Cascade?
Someone mentioned STP (Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic) to me, and that was my first introduction to Cascade.

  3. Why did you become a member of Cascade?
Initially, the thought of supporting the organization and discounts to Cascade's organized rides was a draw, but it's turned out to be much more. I'm now in my second year as an active member, and through Cascade I've met many new friends. It's not typical that you can meet so many people of different backgrounds who are all united by a love of cycling. I feel fortunate for the space that it's provided me.

  4. Have you participated in any of Cascade’s rides?
I did Flying Wheels recently and loved the challenge! I also rode STP and CTS this year, both for the second time. The energy that you get from the organized rides is unmatched, its such a different thrill than a normal ride.

  5. Anything you'd like to share about your experience with Cascade that is inspirational or motivational to potential members?
When I first started taking cycling seriously a year ago, the thought of completing STP was beyond me and felt like a near impossible feat. After becoming a member of Cascade and starting CTS… well, yeah, it was still tough. I remember finishing a training ride, coming home, and crashing on the couch for a long nap. But I found that after several weeks of training and just showing up, I slowly started to improve. What used to be an impossible 50 miles became a manageable, and even pretty light day. When STP time came, it was tough, but not nearly impossible. The training I received and all of the advice and help I got from fellow members had prepared me for that moment. And ultimately the experience taught me something - nothing is out of reach! Preparation, dedication, and the right support system, and you can find yourself accomplishing things you wouldn't have thought possible. That is something truly special that I am genuinely grateful for.

On the lighter side:

Most useful or favorite bike accessory?
My Garmin Edge cycling computer. While I don’t need it to have a great ride, it's just one of those things that I don't leave without.

Favorite bike hack?
There are some pretty good stretches that you can do while on the bike. A couple of my faves - reaching an arm behind and grabbing the tail of my saddle helps stretch out the shoulder/chest area. Standing up on the pedals and pushing my hips back really helps with the hamstring and calf area. So handy to do while on the move!

Favorite snack?
Dried fruits and Honey Stinger waffles.

Favorite book, tv show, or movie?
My taste in books skips around a lot! Currently in a memoir phase - a few of my faves are: The Glass Castle, Brain on Fire, and When Breath Becomes Air.
