Join us for a relatively short ride from Seattle to the Duwamish Valley Celebration in Georgetown on recently built cycling infrastructure! Let's meet at Hing Hay Parkin the Chinatown International District. Be there, ready to go at 10:45 a.m. We will start with a required safety briefing, and roll out when that's done. All riders must attend the safety briefing to participate. Most of the route will be on new concrete-protected bike lanes designed for riders of all ages and abilities. However, we will be mixing with traffic for short sections from the CID to the SODO trail and through the Georgetown business district.
Note - this is a short one way ride that will explore some of the brand new improvements that are expected to bring safer streets and trails for all travelers and better connect existing trails in South Seattle. The recently completed Georgetown to Downtown project will help keep everyone safe by adding protected bike lanes on busy arterial streets to keep people biking and scooting separated from cars and trucks, and installing a wide range of safety features such as all-way stops, raised bus stops, and signal upgrades. The ride will end at the Duwamish Valley Celebration in Georgetown where the ride will officially end. Celebrate the completion of the Georgetown to Downtown Safety Project and the Georgetown to South Park Connection with live music, free food, and community voices. 12:00 - 2:00 PM at Mini Mart City Park in Georgetown. Riders are welcome to join in the festivities in Georgetown and should expect to retrace the route on their own or arrange for alternate transportation.
The recently completed Georgetown to Downtown project extends the separated route for people biking and scooting on the north and south ends of the existing SODO trail on 5th Ave S in SODO. Specifically, the project added protected bike lanes at the north end from the existing Center City Bike Network and S Dearborn St lanes in the Chinatown-International District directly to the trail. At the south end, the project added a new connection from the trail to 6th Ave S, where protected bike lanes take cyclists all the way to S Lucile St and Georgetown. Join us to see these improvements firsthand! This ride is a celebration of years of community advocacy to connect Duwamish Valley neighborhoods by bike and build out the south Seattle bike network.
This ride is relatively flat, but we will climb and descend hills at our own pace, and the group will stay together. Nobody will be left behind. Restrooms are not available at the start so plan accordingly.
Bring a spare tube and tools to fix a flat, just in case. Other things to bring: phone; ID; cash and/or credit card; ORCA card; water and a small snack. Please have full fenders if the roads are wet, or you may be asked to ride at the rear of the group.
Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed in the Weather Status or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Leader will cancel the ride and all registered riders will be sent a notification email. If the ride is cancelled at least two hours before the start, Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location. Please check before leaving for the ride.
We hope you can join us!
