Let's meet at the northwest part of the Safeway parking lot in Port Angeles, where you can find my Sprinter vehicle. Be there, ready to go at the time listed above. We will start with a required safety briefing and roll out when that's done. All riders must attend the safety briefing to participate.
Embark on a unique round-trip bicycle journey from sea level, starting from the Port Angeles Safeway Parking Lot. Cyclists will ascend through the Olympic National Park, passing by ancient fir trees, distant glaciers, and Alpine Meadows, until reaching the breathtaking perspectives of Hurricane Ridge summit.
There are numerous locations along the way up where one can stop, take a break, and appreciate the scenery. Please wear the appropriate attire for the downward journey. Last year, I was freezing, whereas the temperature in Port Angeles was 65 degrees, and on the Ridge, it was 46 degrees.
This is a demanding physical challenge with Hurricane Ridge, a route that even experienced e-bikers find challenging. This journey will push your limits and test your endurance, but the sense of accomplishment at the summit will be worth it.
Unfortunately, at the summit, the Day Lodge and its exceptional restaurant were utterly devastated by a fire in 2023. As a result, food services will not be provided. Please bring or purchase food and beverages at the Safeway for a lunch break.
NOTE: 1) A park pass must be provided or purchased at the park entrance station. For more details, please visit https://www.nps.gov/olym/planyourvisit/fees.htm; 2) The route features three brief tunnels that would benefit from bike front lights on a sunny day; and 3) Make sure you are capable of climbing a vertical distance of over 5800 feet and covering a distance of more than 19 miles up.
You can do the voyage at your own pace, with periodic regroupings. We will take a well-deserved break at the summit.
Restrooms are available at the beginning inside the Safeway and at the summit. In addition, a convenient water bottle fill station is located on the side of the portable restroom at the summit parking lot.
Bring a spare tube and tools to fix a flat, just in case. Other things to bring: phone; ID; cash and/or credit card; ORCA card; water and a small snack. Please have full fenders if the roads are wet, or you may be asked to ride at the rear of the group.
Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed above or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions or other unexpected events, the Ride Leader will cancel the ride and all registered riders will be sent a notification email. If the ride is cancelled at least two hours before the start, Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location. Please check before leaving for the ride.
We hope you can join us!
