Free Group Ride
Yakima Canyon
Event has already happened.
This ride follows the Yakima River through Yakima Canyon. We will ride to a great fruit stand for our half way turn around point.
Road Conditions: Yakima Highway is a beautiful rural road but it does have some traffic and a lot of curves. So your full attention is required and riding with a mirror is a great idea.
Weather Cancellation: Showers and strong winds will cancel. This ride is not safe to do in the rain or heavy winds. In addition to steady rain, any other hazardous conditions will cancel the ride. I will check the weather forecasts on Saturday afternoon and will cancel if necessary by 6:00pm Saturday evening, by posting in the comments section of the CBC page.
Preparations: Every rider is expected to have tubes and tools and to be able to fix a flat and other minor mechanicals. If any rider has a mechanical issue, or a flat tire, we will not abandon them. Keep in mind that cell reception is spotty at best in this along this route.
Directions: Take I-90 East to Exit 109 (to Yakima Canyon Road.) Turn right onto Yakima Canyon Road toward Yakima. About three and a half a miles down the road on the left is the Helen McCabe State Park, where we can leave our cars (normally you need a WA State Park Pass, but this Sunday is a free day and no fee is required.) .
Bathrooms + Water Note: There should be restrooms at the park and we will have a restroom stop at our half way point (where there will be fruit and cold drinks.). 12:30 pm is roll out time, and the drive from Seattle will take you about 2 hours, so be sure to leave enough time to get to the start with water and be ready to go 15 minutes early so you can listen to the safety and route briefing.
Register - Please sign an e-waiver by clicking on the “Register Now” button at the top of this page (right below the ride title) and enter your information. If you cannot make the ride, you do not need to unregister.
BONUS - East of the Mountains - DAY #2: I will be leading another ride on the east side of the mountains on Monday (Old Blewett Pass and Teanaway). So you are welcome to spend the night and join me for dinner in Ellensburg.
