Come to Carnation for a spectacularly scenic gravel ride designed for all levels – including the first-time gravel rider! We'll take the Snoqualmie Valley Trail to Rattlesnake Lake and back. The surface begins with a dirt trail for the first few miles, and then is mostly packed gravel, with a stretch of pavement between the Tokul Road underpass and the Snoqualmie River trail bridge that is a tad over 2 miles each way. Bring a bike with at least 700x28 tires--a hybrid, cross-bike, or mountain bike all will work. While there are no “hills” this out and back route has a ~1-2% grade up to Rattlesnake Lake. Keep in mind that pedaling on gravel is much more difficult than riding on the road. Therefore, the actual speed might be lower for the pace effort, and new-to-gravel riders should expect to be more fatigued on this 44 mile ride than one of similar length on the road.
There is a porta-pot but no water at the start, another porta-pot at the Tokul East Trailhead/Mile 7, and restrooms and water at the Cedar River Watershed Education Center at Rattlesnake Lake/Mile 23.5. There's no lunch stop, so carry food and water for this distance.
A Ride With GPS route map and cue sheet are at the link. If you want a cue sheet, please print one. Bring spare tube, pump, patch kit, tools, and skills to repair flats, and have a cell phone and plan for rescue should your bike fail. As this is an out and back ride, riders can return to the start at any time if the need arises.
Please RSVP by clicking on the red Register Now button at the top of this page. Note that there will also be a Steady pace version of this ride.
If the weather meets the cancellation threshold, I will post a ride-cancelled notice in the Comments block below at least 2 hours prior and not go to the start.
