A Linking Ride to the Public Art Tour
We will ride a short distance from Gas Works Park around Ballard at a Steady Pace (12-14 mph) to enjoy the views over Shilshole Bay and then ride back to the Locks area to join the “Ride to Art” group for the bicycle tour of public art (Note: for this art touring section of the ride, we will be riding an Easy Pace (8-10 mph) with lots of stops and starts around the various art installations). After the art tour (approximately 12:30 to 4:00 or so), we will return to Gas Works Park at a Steady Pace (12-14 mph).
The Art Tour section of this ride (part of the "Ride to Art" event) is described as follows (http://www.cascade.org/node/22955) “Grab your helmets and join us for a bicycle tour of public art from Salmon Bay to Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park. Partnering with Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture is offering a family-friendly, 10 mile (round trip) bike tour for all ages and abilities that will take you from Ballard to Belltown. We will stop to view public artworks at Hiram Chittenden Locks, Myrtle Edwards Park and more. Artists Marvin Oliver (A Salish Welcome) and Roger Fernandes (Snoqual/Moon the Transformer) will join us to talk about their artworks. Participants will also learn about other bike routes in the region that feature prominent public artworks.
This easy-paced tour will take you on public streets, bicycle lanes and multi-use trails. Bicycles and helmets required.”
Please note that parking may be an issue around Gas Works Park on Saturday since there is also a University of Washington football game that day as well as the usual weekend traffic. Please allow appropriate time to get the starting location to allow for waiver signing and for the Safety briefing prior to the ride. The meeting area will be by the Public Restrooms in Gas Works Park.
The route we will follow (based on final weather and other conditions) is at: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/10434245 (The only hill is the climb up 8th Ave NW)
