Vintage bikes, collector’s items, fixer-uppers, and more than two dozen used bicycles are available to purchase from Dec. 14-20. Buy an affordable bike for a loved one while raising money for the Build-a-Bike program.
Among all the used bikes that will be sold during the Major Taylor Project online auction Dec. 14-20 is one that brought a twinkle to Cascade Fleet Manager Stephen Rowley’s eye.
It’s a vintage blue and yellow Lemond Zurich. “Reynolds 853 steel frame, Shimano Ultegra components, it’s just super pretty and in really good shape and I bet it would be fun to ride,” Rowley says, channeling his inner bike nerd.
Whether you’re a bike nerd who likes to geek out on vintage components, or you’re just looking for an affordable beginner bike for a loved one, the online auction next Monday to Sunday is an opportunity to pick up a donated used bicycle at a great price.
“We have mountain bikes, a time-trial bike, a custom-made Davidson tandem, vintage bikes, newer bikes that are ready to ride, some that need repairs, bikes with vintage Campagnolo components that will interest collectors,” Rowley says.
Thirty bicycles priced from $100 to $1,000 are available, with all proceeds going to the MTP Build-a-Bike program that helps youths from underserved communities create their own bikes. There are fat-tire snow bikes for $350 each--perfect for winter rides in the snow--as well as commuter, touring, and cyclocross bikes.
Brands include Cannondale, Kona, Felt, Redline, Norco, Novara, Spot, Bianchi, Specialized, Trek, Cervelo, Argon, De Rosa, Jamis, Fuji, and more.
Rowley has been busy for the past month repairing, cleaning, and making notes about each bike that buyers can review before entering a bid.
“If a bike is in good condition and is ready to ride I’m doing final touches to make it ready to rock and roll. Otherwise I’m taking notes about tuneups that might be needed. We have a few bikes with dented frame tubes, but which have really good parts on them that people might want.”
Rowley pulls out a few other curiosities from a storage trailer including several vintage Italian bikes. One is a Guerciotti with downtube shifters and Campagnolo components for $850.
Another vintage curiosity is a lemon yellow Kirk Pacenti Pista track bike that needs tires. “Handbuilt frame by iconic designer and fabricator,” Rowley wrote in his notes about the bike.
Other custom-made bikes include a Bilenky frame from the legendary Philadelphia bike maker, and a Rodriguez made in Seattle.
“It’s a really nice collection and we are pricing them to move,” Rowley says.
See the bikes and make your bids here from Dec. 14-20.
