U District Food Bank Food Rescue Ride
Reduce food waste and help feed the community by rescuing food from a local grocery store and bike it to the University District Food Bank. Ride with 5 to 7 other pedaling volunteers to bike to grocery stores in the University District in order to rescue valuable and nutritious food for the University District Food Bank grocery program. If you don't have a cargo bike or bike trailer, let us know we have a whole fleet of bike trailers that we are more than happy to lend out!
MEETING POINT
Meet at the University District Food Bank at 5017 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105 (map). At the front of the building there is a large garage door and you’ll find us gathered just inside of the garage. Only bikes are allowed in the garage during the times below.
MEETING TIMES
Arrive at the food bank at 9:45am.
TIME COMMITMENT
The food rescue ride takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to make. We’ll be rescuing food from multiple grocery stores, so if you can only help rescue food from 1 or 2 stores that is OK!
WHAT TO BRING
- Bring yourself
- a bike;
- a helmet;
- a way to carry a banana box full of food (panniers, rack, basket, backpack, trailer);
If you have a trailer, bring that. If not, we have ones you can borrow, and we're happy to show you how to use them too.
ACTIVITY: FOOD RESCUE GROUP RIDE
After everyone arrives we hook up the bike trailers to the volunteers who requested them. We will be riding as a group down to the Trader Joe's in the U District and then up to the Safeway on 75th. From time to time we’ll also rescue food from the GoPuff near University Village.
SNACKS
Every week we'll have different snacks and treats for you to try once you arrive at the food bank! Coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and cold drinks will also be available for volunteers.
