Food Rescue & Grocery Delivery | Byrd Barr Place food bank

Important event details:

When:

Meet us on Thursdays at 9 a.m.

Where:

Meet In the parking lot towards the back of the building. Look for a large barn door.

The address of the food bank is: 722 18th Ave, Seattle, WA 98122 (map)

How:

After everyone arrives, we will split the deliveries and the volunteer riders into groups of 2 or 3. We will then be given our delivery routes, load up our bikes and ride out to run our deliveries! A food bank staff member will have a cart for us to use which will make bringing grocery boxes out to the garage a whole lot easier. Finally and most importantly, remember to have fun!

Making the deliveries:

Delivering to apartment buildings: Once you arrive at the apartment building, call the phone number provided on the route email telling them that you are from the Byrd Barr Place and you are delivering their groceries for the week. Ask them if they can come down to collect their groceries or whether they would like to buzz you into the building to put their groceries in front of their door. If you arrive at the apartment building and someone lets you in, go ahead and put the bags in front of the recipient's door, knock, and call out “grocery delivery”.

If you are unable to reach the person who you are delivering to and you are unable to get into the apartment building, please place the bags as close as you can to the main apartment building entrance. Everyone who we are delivering groceries to was contacted by the food bank telling them to expect their groceries in the late morning on Thursday.

Safety:

Please take healthy precautions by wearing a mask, putting on full finger gloves when handling the boxes and packaged food and use hand sanitizer before and after every drop-off.

Time commitment:

We will be delivering groceries to 3-4 apartment buildings and the deliveries should take an hour and a half to 45 minutes to make!

Bike Trailers:

If you would like to use a trailer, please check-in with volunteer managers Joseph and/or Nancy when you arrive. They will help you hook a bike trailer up to your bike and answer any questions you have about riding with a trailer. At the end of your ride, please drop the trailers back off where you found them inside the building. If you arrive back at the food bank after 2 p.m. you may have to drop the bike trailers off through the front entrance.

Coffee and Pastries:

All of the volunteers are welcome to join the ride leaders after the food rescue and grocery delivery at Good Weather Bicycle & Cafe at 12 p.m. for some greatly deserved refreshments.
