As New York City's transportation commissioner from 2007 to 2013, Janette Sadik-Khan transformed the streets of one of the busiest, most congested cities into safer, more dynamic spaces for vehicles, bikers, and pedestrians. Her urban re-imagination featuring the use of simple visual cues to denote protected spaces, innovative traffic calming and bike lane designs, and the installation of hundreds of pocket parks and plazas has influenced the redesign of countless cities around the world since. Streetfight: Handbook for an Urban Revolution chronicles her deconstruction and reinvention of the street in New York City and beyond. Joining us in Seattle, she will discuss the powerful new book and the many innovative ideas in it already changing cities around the world in conversation with Seattle Mayor Ed Murray.![]()
