The Hearty Girls- Ride to Ellen Kickoff Event
When:
Sun. Apr 26, 2015 11:00am
We are a group of 3 women, known as the "Hearty Girls", who are organizing a bike ride/road rally from Seattle to Burbank, CA in September. We hope to have a snowball effect in which we gather riders along our journey- via variious bike clubs in each city. Our goal is to have hundreds of folks ride into the parking lot of the Ellen Degeneres Show on 9/21/15! The purpose of our ride is to dispel myths of lung cancer (not just a smokers' disease) and raise funds for lung cancer research. We are working with the group, LUNGevity, who will be the beneficiary of our funds.
I was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer in 2011. I have never smoked. I have had several rounds of chemo and radiation and the cancer (now in my lymph nodes) is stable. I now have an electric bike so that I can still enjoy rides!
In addition to the main September event, we will have short rides/rallies in Seattle and Tacoma each month until September:
Our first short ride will be Sunday, April 26th. We will be riding from UW's west entrance ( 40th and 15th NE) to Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (825 Eastlake Ave E). The ride is approximately 2.6 miles on easy terrain.
When we arrive at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, we will have a short rally with speakers (Dr. Renato Martins), the Husky Alumni Band, and a couple cancer survivors. We will be videotaping the event and sending that to the Ellen Show... letting her know that we are on our way!
We would love as many riders as possible to join us. Following the rally, riders can continue on for a nice ride around Lake Union and beyond. Many of us will be returning to the UW area for a drink at the College Inn Pub.
Times: 11:00 a.m. meet at the UW west entrance; 11:15 depart for ride; 11:45 arrive at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance for rally, speeches and videotaping for Ellen; 12:30 depart for College Inn Pub or continue on bike ride.
