Good Afternoon!  Does May Valley Road have an adequate shoulder for bikes?  Is there any gravel riding?  Thank you, Joan

I led a ride along May Valley in mid-July. There were a couple of trucks, but otherwise it was pretty quiet. The shoulder gets narrow at times. There is sometimes a little gravel on the road. It was mostly peaceful.

Joan,

This response was provided by Cascade Bicycle Club management regarding your "adequate shoulder" question:

Yes, there will be sections of the road that do not have a shoulder, we may also have to share the road with large trucks. We will try to take every precaution, try to position ourselves safely, and try to control the lane when necessary (and as allowed by the RCW).  But there is an inherent risk in sharing the road with vehicles.   If these situations are uncomfortable for you, perhaps this is not the ride for you."

Here is Section 1. of the Cascade Bicycle Club Free Group Ride Waiver and Release.  It acknowledges the risk and is signed by each rider prior to the ride:

"I am aware that with any bicycle related activity there are certain inherent dangers, including but not limited to the hazards of roads, off road terrain, accidents, actions of participants and other persons.  By my participation in any Event, I certify that I am aware of these inherent dangers of bicycle riding and the safety rules of the road applicable to bicycles."

Regarding your question about gravel riding: This route, as I rode it on August 24, had no gravel or other off-road sections. Often there is loose gravel on the pavement where unpaved driveways meet the road.

We don't have any plans for this particular route in the near future.  Please keep your eye on the Cascades Rides Calendar.  There are many great ride opportunities coming up.

Stepen,
