While traditionally a kick-off day for football, January 1st we will be riding our Kick Off the New Year Right Ride to help jump-start your 2021 New Year's resolution to ride more! (You did make that resolution last night, didn't you?)
Please note: During COVID-19 Phases 1.5 and 2, all Free Group Rides are limited to six total participants: the Ride Leader and five others. Registration for the ride (using the red “Register Now” button above) is REQUIRED to participate. If you decide not to ride, please unregister for this ride so that an additional spot will be made available to another.
Face coverings (for mouth and nose) are required when the group makes extended stops. Face coverings are recommended for the duration of the ride. Please bring personal hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes and tissues for use at rest stops.
Today's ride starts from Matthews Beach Park and takes a 26-mile route around the north end of Lake Washington at a steady pace (12-14 MPH on flats with no wind)! Other Cascade Free Group Rides will be on the same route, starting from different locations. Maybe we'll get a chance to wish them all a Happy New Year.
Let's meet at the parking lot at Matthews Beach Park at 10:40 a.m. for our pre-ride safety briefing, with a departure at 11 a.m.
We will climb and descend hills at our own pace, and our goal will be to stay together.
Restrooms are available at the start. If they are closed, we will stop at Log Boom Park, at the 5-mile point. Other restrooms are available at Juanita Beach (about 10 miles) and Marina Park in Kirkland (13 miles).
Bring a spare tube and tools to fix a flat, just in case. Please have full fenders if the roads are wet, or you may be asked to ride at the rear of the group.
Note: If weather conditions meet the weather cancellation criterion listed above or if there are unforeseen hazardous riding conditions, the Ride Leader will post a ride-canceled note in the Comments section below at least two hours prior to the start and Ride Leader(s) will not be at the start location.
We hope you can join us and Happy New Year!

Hi there, Looks like a fun ride on an auspicious day. If you are signed up to ride but need to cancel, kindly text me at 425-220-8820. Maybe I can take your place. Thank you, and Happy New Year!
iffy weather ahead
There's currently at 78% chance of rain on New Years Day. I hope the forecast is wrong! I don't mind riding in the occasional drizzle, but since I wear glasses, it's impossible to see if there's too much rain.
True, the forecast doesn't
True, the forecast doesn't look promising. I'll make a weather call at least 2 hours before the ride. I wear a hat with a visor under my helmet to keep rain off my glasses. It works pretty well!
Rain cancellation
It looks likely to rain on us, so regrettably, I am canceling the ride. Wishing you a Happy New Year and hope to see you on some rides soon!
