Are you new to bicycling, been off your bike for awhile, feeling trapped inside or tired of looking at the same four walls during exercise? Is 2018 your year to get active, begin commuting, take part in the Free Group Rides, tackle your first century (100 mile ride), the STP, or another personal challenge? Are you a bit unsure about your biking capabilities, riding in groups, or cycling during winter? If so, then the Getting Ready to Ride Series (GR2R) is for you. GR2R South is an early season, eight-week progressive series focusing on the South County area that begins with a 15 mile mostly flat first ride and then adds a bit of elevation gain, distance or technical difficulty each week.
GR2R will help you to:
***Increase endurance and confidence.
***Build hill-climbing skills.
***Make new friends in the cycling community.
***Gain confidence riding safely with groups.
***Get ready for the Cascade Training Series (CTS), beginning in April.
GR2R rides are free and open to any rider. You will ride with others who share your pace level and your enthusiasm for riding. All rides will be led by Cascade Ride Leaders, experienced volunteers who enjoy riding, are knowledgeable about bike safety and the rules of the road. In addition to becoming familiar with bicycling and gaining fitness, you will learn group riding skills, while exploring different local trails, quiet roads, and popular biking destinations. These are social, stay-together rides with waits at the top of hills, at all critical turns and photo-op stops. Please check back at this ride posting within a day or two of the ride for updated route information.
Steady rain, ice/snow or unsafe conditions will cancel a ride. If a ride is cancelled, it will be posted in the comments section on the Cascade.org calendar and on the Meetup announcement two hours before the ride start time. In that instance, ride leaders will not be waiting at the start. Pre-registering online: If you have a Cascade account (free, just sign up), you can pre-register for this ride online by clicking on the Register button at the top of this page and checking the waiver acceptance box. Pre-registering saves time at the beginning of the ride and provides us with more legible emergency contact information. If you cannot make the ride, you do not need to un-register.
Restrooms at start. We will be starting at Three Friends Fishing Hole in Kent, WA. There are porta potties along the trail, and at some destinations, so please plan accordingly.
All riders should come equipped to deal with their own mechanical issues, flats and bring enough snacks and water. Waiting for mechanical issues will be at the discretion of the ride leader. Please arrive at least 30 minutes early (at 10:30am) to get yourself ready, listen to the safety briefing and sign or check the safety waiver. 11:00AM. is roll-out time!
After our ride, there is an optional get-together at BBQ Pete's (http://www.bbqpetes.com/). This is an opportunity to refuel, talk cycling, and just socialize. BBQ Pete's is located at S 212th St and the West Valley Hwy, just over a mile from Three Friends Fishing Hole Park.
Cycling outside is invigorating, motivating and the sights are wonderful, especially when you are with a group of like minded people!! Come on, get your bike ready, get dressed, step outside, lets ride together!!

Tips for enjoyable riding
Thank you for signing up to ride with us! If you are new to cycling (in general or this time of the year), there are a few things you can do to make your ride more enjoyable.
The temperature can be cool in the morning with a wind chill factor (from moving) before warming up, but the sun can make you very warm. Make sure to wear clothes in layers and top it off with a wind breaker (waterproof jacket if sprinkling), but don’t worry about not having bicycle-specific clothing. Just wear what you have. Beanie, neck warmer, and insulated gloves work well, too! And in case the sun comes out and you become warm, you need to be able to carry what you shed.
Another tip on making the ride more enjoyable… Bring smiles and be social! Remember that this is a group ride. You will meet lots of like-minded people. Come early and chat with others J.
See you on the road soon!
Hi there,I just wanted to let
Hi there,I just wanted to let you know I might not make it there in the morning. I had been out of town and I was supposed to be back on Saturday. I just got home. Buy, I signed up for next week, if I don’t see you tomorrow. Have a great ride and I look forward to meeting everyone.
Thanks Theresa
Thanks Theresa for giving me the heads up! Do hope to see on the ride! Have a great night!
Rainy, maybe?
At last check, the chance of rain at the start time of tomorrow's ride stands at 55%. Regardless, we'll probably ride unless high winds make it hazardous to do so. Depending on conditions, we might shorten the route, but in any case there are a few things you might want to do to make the rain a little less annoying.
A good rain jacket is a blessing in rain; and if it's really wet, rain pants may even be in order. Fenders are a big plus; if you don't have any, you may be asked to ride at the back, where spray coming up from your rear wheel won't douse anyone behind you. Even with fenders, spray from the front wheel will catch your feet, so shoe covers are good. A trick to make your feet even more comfortable; put on your socks, then slip your feet into plastic bags (like bread bags or newspaper bags) before you put on your shoes. Even if your shoes get wet, your feet will stay toasty. A cycling cap or a ball cap if it'll fit under your helmet will keep the rain out of your eyes. You can get helmet covers specifically designed to stretch over your helmet for wet weather as well. Waterproof gloves are helpful, too; wet fingers get kinda chilly. If you have them, hand warmers are great in cold or wet weather.
We'll see you all in the morning!
Thanks!
Thanks Robert for putting out some great ideas and thoughts!
