The Alaskan Way Viaduct will be shut down for three weeks. Traffic into and out of downtown Seattle may be gridlocked. How could I avoid the mess?
Let's ride our bikes and find out! This ride is a chance to try out bike commute routes in a friendly group, on a Sunday afternoon with more daylight and less traffic.
We'll meet in front of the Evans Pool entrance of the Green Lake Community Center at 12:15 pm for check in, pre-ride discussion and safety brief. Then roll out at 12:30pm and take a route along the Eastlake corridor to downtown. We'll return along an alternate route up Westlake corridor. Most of this route is in bike lanes and protected bike paths. It's not very hilly, and we will ride at a pace of about 12 mph on the flat sections. We will stay together as best we can and regroup as needed to keep everyone on track. There are restrooms at the start point.
Please pre-register by clicking on the red "Register Now" button above. If you're not a Cascade Bicycle Club member, that's ok: creating an account gives you a free basic club membership! (Advanced registration helps ease things at the start, but is not required.)
Any kind of bike in good working condition is OK, including e-bikes. Check your brakes, tires, and chain in advance. Helmets are required. No special bike-specific clothing or shoes are necessary.
I've been a bicycle commuter in Seattle for many years, so bring your questions, too! Hope you can join us.
