Discover the Lake & Volcano District cycling Chile southern backroads. Explore this fascinating part of the country dominated by clear-water lakes and amazing live volcanoes. Together with friendly locals, you will pedal alongside green rolling meadows, visit local ethnic villages and relax in soothing natural hot springs.
This tour is for nature lovers. For 12 days you will be visiting protected wild areas and observe endemic birds, learn about some of the most active Chilean volcanoes, and hike through native temperate rain forest. And for those who are looking for some extra active sports in a pristine nature setting, this is surely the trip for you. In addition to road cycling, hiking on glaciers and mountain-biking in national parks provide more ways to experience the Lake & Volcano District.
The thermal waters of this area are some of the best in the world; due to the volcanic activity, you can find hot springs and thermal spas almost everywhere you go. Likewise, the cuisine is another highlight of the tour, with the ingredients that have made Chile known worldwide: wine, delicious produce and seafood from the Pacific Ocean.
Our tour starts in Temuco, the capital city of La Araucania, and from there we head off to the Andean areas of this untamed land, cycling almost entirely on quiet well paved roads that go alongside different lakes and volcanoes. We stay at 3-star and 4-star charming hotels and inns and enjoy hot springs 4 times during the tour.
This well supported cycling program has been especially tailor-made for CBC members. Feel free to invite your friends along too for the best possible deal. This trip is not to be missed!

The road leads us by the Palguín valley through the National Park Villarrica, with views of scenic waterfalls, as we will pass several majestic snow-capped volcanoes. The vegetation changes spectacularly as we ascend to Chinay, the higher point of the day at 4.101 feet above sea level. After approx 3-4 hours (22 miles) of steady, non technical climbing up a forest service road, we’ll arrive at the Pichi Llancahue Glacier trail, where we’ll take a good break. Later we’ll hike the trail (2 ½ hours round trip) that leads to a phenomenal glacier which is absolutely covered by the volcanic ashes of the Villarrica volcano. Once again you’ll enjoy the stunning views of four volcanoes.
Back to the entrance of the trail, you can sag back or mount the bikes again and experience an exciting descent through the forest (not suitable for beginners) . After 30 minutes riding downhill we’ll exit the park’s boundaries. There is an option to visit the amazing Geometricas Hot Springs on the way down (Additional cost of US$25, www.termasgeometricas.cl). While driving in the bus we’ll have a wonderful view of Calafquén Lake, which is situated on the eastern border of Coñaripe, a town that was totally destroyed by the 1964 eruption of the Villarrica volcano (Rucapillan). After 90 minutes we arrive at a thermal hotel where we have dinner and stay overnight.
Optional Road Cycling (minimum 6 participants): we’ll start riding alongside the Villarrica Lake by its beautiful south bay until the city of Villarrica, where we’ll head south. Our destiny of the day is the Calafquén Lake located along Licanray and Coñaripe beach-towns. The landscape is dominated by the presence of Villarrica Volcano which we will be surrounding in a 75%. Later on, as we ride by the lake Calafquén, we’ll see in several places the lava flows that in 1964 destroyed the town of Coñaripe; end of the ride. From Coñaripe we’ll drive up the road to the Geometric hot springs and meet the others that went on MTB for lunch/hike.
Bike traveled distance: 64.5 km / 40 miles.

Weather notes
We suggest visiting the web for current conditions in Chile and doing your own research on this topic. www.meteochile.cl/reg09.html and www.meteochile.cl/reg10.html or www.accuweather.com
Generally the weather in this area is very similar to Northern California, specially the coast side. Late October and November (spring time in the southern hemisphere) present milder temperatures with some scattered rain. During December you can start feeling the beginning of the summer with temperatures around 50°F / 81°F. In January and February temperatures range between 60°F / 95°F. Remember that you are visiting the Lake & Volcano district, so always expect some rain!In Chile there are no insects or animals that represent a threat to human beings.
Packing Tips
We advise you to bring clothing for warm and cold weather; also including helmet and cap, brightly colored cycling jerseys, arm and leg warmers, base layers, windbreaker, booties, gloves, two pairs of sneakers, a waterproof jacket and any other waterproof item, sunglasses, bathing suit and sandals. Don’t forget your camera!
Airline Information
We highly recommend getting the Chile Airpass ticket with Lan Airlines, which includes the international flight from Seattle to Santiago (Chile) and the domestic flights Santiago(SCL)-Temuco(ZCO)/Puerto Montt(PMC)-Santiago(SCL). This Airpass is definitely less expensive than buying the flights separately and what's more important it is very flexible if there are some unexpected last minute changes. Lan Airlines contact information and suggested flight numbers will be informed ASAP by EcoTours Chile.
Itinerary
12 days & 11 nights. Tour starts a Saturday in Temuco's airport and finishes in Puerto Montt's airport unless you decide taking one of our great add-on tours. See detailed itinerary for further information.
Altitude sickness
There is nothing to be worrying about altitude sickness. We will never get higher than 6,000 feet (second days ride).
Currency issues
In Chile, the local currency is called peso.
The current exchange rate is $1 USD = $510 Chilean Pesos (CLP).
Travel checks are not convenient because only few places accept them and the exchange rate is 10% lower than dollar bills. Most credit cards are accepted at shops, restaurants and hotels. The most common cards are Master Card, Visa and Dinners Club. American Express is less commonly accepted that the others. There is no need to bring a large amount of cash; there are ATMs almost everywhere we go on the tour. The maximum amount of money that you can withdraw per day is equivalent to USD $400 ($200.000 CLP).
Gratuity
In Chile the gratuity for hospitality services is normally 10% of the bill. In Chile people usually tip in restaurants, hotels and the local staff of guides. You shouldn't tip taxi drivers, baggage carriers and bar tenders, they do not expect any tips. At the end of the trip gratuity for the crew for a job well done is highly appreciated.
Food
Food in Chile is great and healthy. Likewise, it is one of the highlights of this tour. Great wine, fresh and flavorsome produce, seafood and all kinds of meat (beef, pork, chicken, lamb and wild boar) will be part of the daily menus. We are prepared to cater vegetarian and gluten free food, however if you are vegan you may have to be flexible because in Chile we have very limited vegan options.
Insurance
Travel insurance is highly recommended in case you have to cancel the trip for family emergency etc or if you have flight or luggage problems. EcoTours Chile's insurance only covers accident coverage and is very basic. Having your own supplemental medical Insurance that includes emergency evacuation coverage is always a good idea.
Safety
Chile is by far one of the safest countries in South America in terms of public health and crime. We are proud to affirm that our police is one of the least corrupt in the world; they are always friendly and helpful.
Road Safety
Besides your own on-road safety gear (helmet, rearview mirrors, bright colored jerseys and gloves) we provide a support vehicle that drives at the rear of the group with a road-sign that alert other drivers the presence of bike riders on the road. Drivers in Chile are used to bicycles on the road, so they shouldn't bother you while riding. All our staff communicates by radio at all times.
Bicycle choice
If you bring your own bike (which is highly advisable), make sure they have tires of at least 28 cm size. Although the road surfaces are normally in fine shape, one never knows what condition they will be in after the winter. Pack your bike well in a cardboard box that we can easily dismantle for its transportation during the tour. Cascade Bicycle Club members also can get a discount at Crateworks.com on cases are perfect for our tour (as they fold down flat and provide excellent protection for the bikes). Standard size bike hard-cases are welcomed, nevertheless if they are extremely oversized they might have to be shipped to Puerto Varas (last city in the tour) at your own cost (USD $50 approx).
Bike hire
Available for USD $190, standard aluminum, Hybrid style 27 gear road-cycles. Numbers are limited.

We have never been on a bicycle trip that was so well supported, nor stayed or eaten in such unusual and wonderful places. We would certainly recommend this trip to anyone who bicycles with a sense of adventure.
