Pedaling Revolution: How Cyclists Are Changing American Cities
Jeff Mapes

From Oregonian senior political reporter Jeff Mapes, Pedaling Revolution (OSU Press) is essential reading for the approximately one million people who regularly ride bikes to work or on errands, for anyone engaged in transportation, urban planning, sustainability, and public health, and for drivers who don't understand why they're seeing so many cyclists. In a world of increasing traffic congestion, a grassroots movement is carving out a niche for bicycles on city streets. Pedaling Revolution: How Cyclists Are Changing American Cities explores the growing bike culture that is changing the look and feel of cities, suburbs, and small towns across North America.
From traffic-dodging bike messengers to tattooed teenagers on battered bikes, from riders in spandex to well-dressed executives, ordinary citizens are becoming transportation revolutionaries. Jeff Mapes traces the growth of bicycle advocacy and explores the environmental, safety, and health aspects of bicycling. He rides with bicycle advocates who are taming the streets of New York City, joins the street circus that is Critical Mass in San Francisco, and gets inspired by the everyday folk pedaling in Amsterdam, the nirvana of American bike activists. Chapters focused on big cities, college towns, and America's most successful bike city, Portland, show how cyclists, with the encouragement of local officials, are claiming a share of the valuable streetscape".
Following the reading, please join Jeff, Cascade Bicycle Club staff, and special guests for a lively discussion about the cycling renaissance and the advocacy efforts that are changing the face of communities across the country.

An Evening with the Metal Cowboy: Joe Kurmaskie
Tuesday, Dec. 9, 7 p.m.
Seattle REI, 222 Yale Street
$5 (Cascade members are 2 for 1!)
Cascade Bicycle Club is proud to present what's become a don't miss, annual evening of humor and humanity to kick off your holiday season.
Author and performer Joe Kurmaskie never reads from his books (yes, he CAN read, but we digress). Instead, the Metal Cowboy commands a stage with a multimedia performance that's by turns stand-up comedy, digital slideshow, rant, social commentary, audience interaction and Irish Bard-style storytelling… It's truly an evening you'll talk about long after he's been extradited by the proper authorities!
This year he'll bring another rowdy evening of slides and storytelling, humor and humanity, focused on adventures in Northern Italy, recaps and new stories from the family trip pulling a caravan of five family members cross the length of Canada and previews for an upcoming Africa adventure. Joe will take you on one helluva a travel adventure without having to leave your zipcode.
This evening he'll also add to and ask audience members to contribute to his popular "You might be a cyclist" routine. Bring your favorite "You might be a cyclist punch line to share. Prizes, raffles for swag, book signing and way, way more.
"A modern day Mark Twain on two wheels." - USA Today.
"David Sedaris trapped in the body of Lance Armstrong." - Boston Globe
An Evening with Willie Weir
Colombia and Venezuela: Bicycling Beyond the Headlines
Tuesday, Nov. 11, 7 p.m.
Seattle REI, 222 Yale Street
$5 (Cascade members are 2 for 1!)
Colombia has spent many years ranked as one of the most dangerous countries on the planet. Most Americans only exposure to Venezuela is from seeing president Hugo Chavez rant against American Imperialism.
Most folks would leave both countries off their travel list. Not Willie Weir. He has made a habit out of seeking out the less desirable travel destinations. He spent five months pedaling around India. He cycled in South Africa right after the election of Nelson Mandela. He pedaled through the Bosnia when tanks still out numbered cars. Cuba interested him solely because his government said he couldn't go. And the beginning of the war in Iraq didn't deter him from traveling across Turkey.
As Willie and his wife, Kat, prepared for this latest journey, all the advice from every source steered them to travel only the main roads ... especially in Colombia. This was depressing to say the least for cyclists who delight traveling off the beaten path.
It was all gearing up to be a depressing trip. Then an email popped into his inbox... and the adventure took a most interesting turn...
Willie has been delighting Cascade members with presentations about his travels for over 15 years. He is a columnist for Adventure Cyclist magazine and a bicycling commentator for public radio station KUOW. His presentations often "fill up", so get to REI early to reserve a seat.
