International Tours Night
Tuesday, Jan 12, 6 - 8:45 p.m.
Seattle REI, 222 Yale Street
Part One: 2010 Cascade Affiliated International Tours, 6 - 7:25 p.m.
Richard Oddy, Pedaltours NZ & guests
We are every excited to offer a new Pedaltours destination on Nov. 29 - Dec. 16, 2010: We are off to enchanting India for a tour we call "From Raj to Riches." Beginning in Delhi, the tour shows off the beauty and majesty of the Rajasthan region and includes a luxury overnight on one of India's famous trains. After "Riding the Raj" we will fly down for a week in one of India's most beautiful regions, Kerala. This once-in-a-lifetime tour is custom to Cascade Bicycle Club members.
Due to the success of our Vietnam tours over the past two years we will be offering a final Grand Vietnam tour next year. You'll find out why we have sent more than 140 members on this tour over the past three years. The Pedaltours routes are superb, the people some of the nicest in the world, and the cuisine, well, you'll just have to experience that for yourself.
Finally, what would a bike tour program be without showcasing the history, beauty and charm of old-world Europe? We have partnered with the five-star CBC member-rated Bike Switzerland to bring you an outstanding tour of Switzerland, running Sept. 2 - 13, 2010. Riders pedal about 35-40 miles per day, so the tour is suitable for beginners. The tour offers the kind of quality riding, lodging and food that only Europe can provide, and special discounted rates are available if you register before Jan. 31 2010.
For more details and pricing on all tours please visit the tours webpages in mid-November. We will also be featuring detailed descriptions in the Cascade Courier on each tour.
Part Two: Touring the Hebrides of Scotland, 7:30 p.m - 8:45 p.m.
Slide show with Dan Hershman
If you ask any UK cyclist to list his or her top ten tours, you’ll be sure to find that the Outer Hebrides of Scotland is high on the list. Cascade members Dan and Jane Hershman completed a three-week tour of the Islands of the Hebrides this past year, and Dan will share with you the sights, routes and romance of a bicycle tour that was surely the trip of a lifetime.
Cycle touring in this remote area allows you to discover the quiet charm of the Hebrides: coastal islands full of a charm and beauty that belie their long, tumultuous history. Here you’ll find castles, white sandy beaches with impossibly blue water, quiet farmhouses and the warmest, friendliest people on earth! Despite their northerly latitude, these islands enjoy a mild climate year ‘round. They’re also quiet and nearly traffic-free, as they’re populated with more sheep than people. Join us for a special presentation to learn about the history, passion and beauty of this unique place from the perspective of a cycle adventurer!
PAST EVENTS:
Marketing the Bicycle to the Sub-Conscious Environmentalist:
A Lecture by Mikael Colville-Andersen
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 7 p.m.
Nordic Heritage Museum, 3014 NW 67th Street, Seattle
Join us as Mikael Colville-Andersen explores Copenhagen's journey toward establishing the bicycle as a feasible, acceptable form of transport, as well as the importance of marketing "bicycle culture" to the city's residents. The 500,000 people on bicycles each day in Copenhagen are not necessarily "cyclists" or "environmentalists"; they merely choose to ride because of safe, quick infrastructure. The result of 30 years of traffic and urban planning is that the bicycle has been demystified. It is no longer merely a piece of sports equipment for enthusiasts - it has become a democratic tool that has liberated the people of Copenhagen from cars and created the foundations for one of the world's most liveable cities.
Mikael Colville-Andersen is a filmmaker, photographer, and journalist who is also Copenhagen's leading bicycle culture ambassador. For more than three years he has been documenting Copenhagen's unique bicycle culture in photographs and films. Colville-Andersen's firm Copenhagenize Consulting advises cities, towns, and organizations on bicycle culture, infrastructure, and urban planning, based on best practices from Denmark and Europe and featuring a unique focus on the anthropological aspects of getting more people to choose the bicycle.
This is a free event, and no reservations are necessary. For more information, contact Charlotte Lehmann at (206) 789-5707, extension 21.
This event is co-sponsored by International Sustainable Solutions and the Cascade Bicycle Club.

Cascade Bicycle Club Annual Membership Meeting &
Presentation: By Tandem from Key West to Canada with Jeff & Louise Davis
Tuesday, Oct. 13, Meeting 6:30-7:30 p.m.; Presentation 7:30-9 p.m.
Seattle REI, 222 Yale Street
Learn what your Club has been up to and let us know where you think it should go! Talk to staff, board members, volunteers and others. You can also cast your vote for board members. The membership meeting will be immediately followed by our monthly presentation: "By Tandem from Key West to Canada," with Jeff & Louise Davis
Long-time Cascade members Jeff and Louise Davis wanted to do something big on their tandem to celebrate retirement. Since they wanted it to go from January to September, what could be better than a bike trip from Key West to Canada? Follow them north from the tip of Florida through the Everglades, the sea islands of Georgia, a chilly week in April riding the Outer Banks of North Carolina with Cascade friends Steve and Janet Sisson, and much much more. This was no head-down hammerfest. They took time to smell the sea roses, watch the ponies of Chincoteague, canoe white water in Vermont, spend two nights on a dairy farm in Connecticut, and still ride 5200 wildly indirect miles to the Canadian border at Derby Line, Vermont.
Besides showing you the scenery, Jeff and Louise will explain how to find interesting routes and places to stay far from home, and share their philosophy on how to enjoy a long bike trip and stay happily married. Come join them on this journey of a lifetime.
