Cascade is a bicycle club. Like most of our members, I ride for fitness, fun and friendship. I have been a Ride Leader for nine years, served on the Rides Committee in several positions including Chairman, and managed the Cascade Training Series for the last four years. I continue to ride Cascade Events. Because of this experience, my main focus on the Board will be on Rides and Events.
I want to serve on the Board because I believe that a stronger emphasis on Rides and Events in Cascade’s mission and goals, as shaped by the Board, will lead to the growth in those areas that is necessary to satisfy the needs of our members. In the last seven years, the number of individual rides offered in Cascade’s Daily Rides Program has not increased despite significant growth in Club membership and much greater rider participation in the individual rides that we do offer. Our most popular signature Events sell out, sometimes in just hours or a few days, and leave many members unable to participate. This lack of growth has resulted in dissatisfied members and loss of revenue. In addition, other organizations are moving to fill the void.
All of the Club’s programs are important. There is a synergy between them and Rides and Events that has enabled Cascade to become the largest and most influential cycling organization in the country. Advocacy programs provide the social and physical improvements in our community that enhance our lives and the cycling environment. Development provides partners, supporters and funding for other programs. Education provides the foundations for a cycling based community. Underlying these programs is the critical contribution of volunteers that are the basis of the club’s success. Rides and Events helps to provide the visibility, funding, and membership essential to the growth and success of Advocacy, Education and Development and the continuing support of volunteers.
My primary objective on the Board is to ensure that Cascade continues to grow as the preeminent promoter of cycling in the greater Seattle area. We need to increase our Ride and Event offerings and increase participant satisfaction and safety. Being able to cycle with others on almost any day of the year and ride the Events are the reasons why our riding members join and stay with Cascade. Rides and Events helps provide the membership base, funding, and other resources needed to sustain and grow Cascade Bicycle Club and its programs which are essential to building a better community through cycling.
